Red Sox Trade Groome for Hosmer, Padres Get Prospects

Padres Acquire Groome in Hosmer Deal

Red Sox Land Prospects from San Diego

The Boston Red Sox have traded left-handed pitching prospect Jay Groome to the San Diego Padres in a four-player deal that brought first baseman Eric Hosmer to Boston.

The Padres also received infielder Esteban Quiroz and minor league pitchers Corey Rosier and Max Ferguson in the deal.

Groome, 24, was considered one of the Red Sox's top pitching prospects. He was 9-3 with a 3.23 ERA in 18 starts for Triple-A Worcester last season.

"I'm excited to be a part of the Padres organization," Groome said. "They're a great team with a bright future, and I'm looking forward to contributing in any way I can."

Hosmer, 33, is a four-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner. He batted .272 with 25 home runs and 102 RBIs for the Padres last season.

"We're thrilled to add a player of Eric's caliber to our lineup," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "He's a proven winner and a great leader, and we're confident he'll make a significant impact on our team."
