June 3, 2022
Rafael Nadal has reached the final of the French Open for a record 14th time after defeating third seed Alexander Zverev in a thrilling semi-final on Friday. Zverev retired from the match after rolling his ankle in the second set, handing Nadal a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Nadal is now one win away from claiming a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title and his 14th at Roland-Garros. He will face eighth seed Casper Ruud in the final on Sunday.
The match was evenly contested in the opening set, with both players holding serve until Nadal broke through in the eighth game. Zverev was unable to recover from the break, and Nadal took the set 6-2.
The second set was even more competitive, with both players trading breaks in the first four games. However, Nadal eventually broke through again in the seventh game, and he was serving for the match when Zverev rolled his ankle.
Zverev was in tears as he was forced to retire from the match, and Nadal offered his sympathies to his opponent. Nadal said that he was "very sad" for Zverev and that he hoped he would recover quickly.
Nadal is now the clear favorite to win the French Open, and he will be looking to add another Grand Slam title to his already impressive resume.
