Shark Attack on South Padre Island: Multiple Swimmers Injured

Officials respond to severe shark bites at 4100 block of Gulf Boulevard
South Padre Island, Texas - On Thursday, July 4, 2024, at approximately 11 am, South Padre Island police responded to a call regarding a severe shark attack at the 4100 block of Gulf Boulevard. Multiple swimmers were injured in the incident.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage indicate that a single, aggressive shark was responsible for the attacks. Despite the efforts of lifeguards and emergency responders, four swimmers sustained injuries ranging from minor lacerations to severe bite wounds.
"We've never seen anything like this before," said Chief Scott Burroughs of the South Padre Island Police Department. "This was a highly unusual and unfortunate event." Officials have cordoned off the affected area and are urging swimmers to avoid the waters.
