Iconic Mount Everest Hillary Step Alters Dramatically
A History of the Hillary Step
The Hillary Step was a nearly vertical rock face with a height of around 12 meters (40 ft) located near the summit of Mount Everest at around 8,790 meters (28,840 ft). Apa Sherpa reached the summit of Mount Everest in 2008 after climbing the Hillary Step. He joined Eco Everest Expedition while setting the record.
Recent News
In 2021, Outside magazine reported that the Hillary Step had changed drastically. The feature once sat 200 feet below Everest’s summit and was a difficult technical obstacle for climbers. Now, the Hillary Step appears to have collapsed.
